I now have a "Windows.old(1)" folder that can't be deleted and is hogging space.

I would suggest running and re-running Check for WIndows Update until you really are convinced there are no updates and see if you can get the magic "Get Windows 10" flag to show up in your task bar.

It may be because I installed Visual Studio 2015 which then required a ton of new updatesīut after going through that process the "Get Windows 10" prompt came up! I followed that route and it eventually installed where the manual methods outlined using the download had always crashed on the "Cleaning up" stage. It tells you no updates found and you run "Check now" and suddenly it finds some. What I did do was keep running and re-running Windows Update. Inability to activate Windows 10 which I suspected the above would result in.

I did not follow any of the recommendations above about "hacking" the install with a USB key because I'd just paid out over £150 to get a Pro install of Windows 8.1 specifically for the repaving of my laptop to Windows 10 and did not want to end up with an (The fix is to run an elevated command line command and reboot. I've already paid a ridiculous amount of money to get off Windows 7 ready to install Windows

I do not want to attempt the above hacky workaround because it's well documented that it will be hard/impossible to "activate" Windows 10 with a clean direct install. How hard can this be with a "clean" install FFS?

With no Windows 10 OS anywhere to be seen. It gets to ""Setup is cleaning up before it closes" and then a few seconds later it closes. Redownloaded, re-run and watched screen carefully to see what's happening. Just a bunch of gunky greyed out $windows- folders leftĪnd a 10GB windows.old folder indicating it tried and failed at some point but with no clues given as to how or where.

So finally got Windows 8.1 install, two hours of endless security updates and no mention of Windows 10 so I get the media creation tool which goes through all the steps and finishes with no Windows 10. WhyĪsk me if I want a "new" install with no data if you're going to ignore it?!! When prompted I said I wanted a "new" installation and didn't want any personal files or folders copied across so OF COURSE the "clean" install left most of my folders in the C:\root drive intact as well as creating a 75GB windows.old folder on my drive.

I spent a small fortune on a full new version of Windows 8.1 to avoid problems with upgrading my Dell OEM-licensed laptop as the only way to get to Windows 10 with as little pain as possible (or so I thought) after 3 years of Microsoft crud with failed updates I am so utterly sick of Microsoft upgrades where nothing EVER goes right, and all you get by way of response reporting is a ton of steps to follow that make absolutely no difference.
